Fresh bedding plants can look too small for a container, especially compared with a nursery display already at its peak. Filling every gap immediately often creates a crowded pot later.
Use mature spread as your starting point
Read the expected size and spacing for each variety. Tall and compact forms of the same flower can need very different amounts of room. Leave the plants space to develop foliage without immediately pressing against one another.
Container displays are sometimes planted more closely for a short-lived effect. That approach requires closer attention to water and nutrients and may not suit a beginner who wants the arrangement to last comfortably through a season.
Plan access as well as appearance
You should be able to reach the mix to check moisture and direct water toward it. Leave access to remove damaged leaves or faded flowers. A dense canopy can hide a drying root ball until the plants begin to wilt.
If the pot looks spare, use fewer varieties and let their shapes repeat rather than plugging every opening with another plant. Photograph the arrangement at planting and a few weeks later. Seeing how quickly space fills is one of the most useful lessons a first container can provide, and it helps make the next planting much easier to judge.
