Changing potting mix can make a familiar plant suddenly harder to read. Some peat-free blends look dry at the surface while retaining moisture lower down.
Begin with direct checks
Feel below the top layer and compare the pot's weight when practical. Do not automatically add more water because the new mix has a paler or more open surface than the old one. Different peat-free products also differ from one another.
Read the bag's instructions for initial wetting, feeding, and intended use. A mix for mature containers may not be the best choice for very small seeds. Use fresh, well-stored material where possible and keep the product details for reference.
Compare the old root ball with the new mix
When potting on a nursery plant, its original medium may behave differently from the material around it. Check both during establishment and water so the living root ball actually receives what it needs.
If something goes wrong, investigate light, pot size, drainage, and care alongside the medium. Blaming or praising an entire category of mixes from one plant obscures the useful details. A small first trial lets you learn how a particular product behaves under your conditions before changing the whole collection at once.
