A very dry bagged medium may be reluctant to absorb water, especially if you fill the pot first and pour quickly over the top. Preparing it beforehand can help.
Work in a manageable batch
Use a clean tub and follow the product's instructions. Add water gradually while turning the material so dry pockets become evenly moistened. Aim for the appropriate damp condition, not a heavy slurry. Break up lumps without grinding the texture into fine particles.
Dusty ingredients require sensible handling and any protection specified on the packaging. Work with good ventilation and keep the material away from food preparation areas.
Check before planting
Lift a handful and inspect whether the inside is still dry. Once the batch is uniformly prepared, fill the container gently, leaving the right planting level and watering space. Water in as appropriate for the plant and its roots.
Preparation does not make the mix permanently easy to read. Continue checking below the surface as the plant grows. If you changed brands or ingredients, record that change. The first watering is only the beginning of learning how the medium holds and releases moisture in your particular pot and location.
