The day before departure is a poor time to discover that a watering gadget empties itself in an hour. Give any holiday arrangement a trial while you are still home.
Reduce avoidable demand
Group suitable containers where inspection is easy and provide appropriate protection from harsh exposure. Do not move sun-loving plants into deep darkness for convenience. Water according to their needs before leaving, then let them drain normally.
If someone will help, give simple pot-specific instructions. Mark which plants should be checked and how, rather than asking for the same cup of water in every container. Show them any decorative outer pots that must be emptied.
Test devices under real conditions
Wicks, reservoirs, and drip systems depend on height, flow, medium, and plant demand. Monitor a complete trial and check for leaks or saturated pots. Do not leave a homemade system near electrical equipment or surfaces vulnerable to water damage.
For a longer absence, arrange reliable human checks where possible. Weather can change after you leave, and a fixed setup may not respond. A smaller collection with a clear plan is easier to hand over than a crowded patio whose needs exist only in your memory.
