Clear a washable work surface and bring everything within reach: the new pot, suitable mix, a scoop, and water. Place the empty container where you can inspect its drainage.
Set the height first
Add enough mix for the root ball to sit at its previous planting level with some space below the rim for watering. Ease the plant from its old pot while supporting the root ball. If it is stuck, loosen the container rather than pulling hard on the stem.
Inspect the roots and address crowding or damaged roots according to the plant's needs. Set the root ball in place and fill around the sides. Settle gently; do not ram mix into every space until it becomes dense.
Finish with observation
Water as appropriate for the species and the condition of its roots, following specialist guidance for plants such as succulents that may need different aftercare. Allow drainage and correct any significant sinking.
Keep the plant in suitable protected conditions while it adjusts. Record the date and the mix used. Do not assume it needs immediate fertilizer if the new medium already contains a feed. For the next few checks, compare the moisture in the old root ball with the new surrounding mix; they may not dry together.
