Repotting is not an annual ceremony every plant must undergo. It is a response to a root system or growing medium that no longer suits the plant well.
Look for a pattern
A dense outer mat of roots, unusually rapid drying despite appropriate watering, and a plant that has become difficult to keep stable can suggest the current container is crowded. Slow growth alone is less convincing; light, season, pests, and nutrition can also explain it.
Slide the root ball out only when you can do so without damaging the plant. Support its weight. Compare the amount of visible mix with the roots rather than counting one or two roots emerging from a hole.
Decide what actually needs changing
Sometimes the pot size is adequate but the medium has deteriorated. Sometimes a plant prefers a relatively snug container. Research its requirements before assuming that a much larger pot will help.
If repotting is justified, prepare the suitable mix and container first. Where possible, work during active growth under moderate conditions. Afterward, watch the moisture pattern instead of immediately returning to the old schedule. The aim is to give roots a workable environment, not simply to make the plant look newly purchased again.
